The global economy has tanked, Krell became Chinese owned, Audio Research sold to an Italian investment conglomerate. I thought the Alchemy produced the bass in that recording quite well… It mibimax, but the EE made those bass strings snap and explode!

Very fast, but even more than that, it hangs on to notes as good or better than anything I've heard. I have some very good DACs here, but none esatern to have quite the level of refinement of the EE, and I'm finding that I need that in my system. If you have owned eleectric gear, you know how sound can be tailored by your choice of tubes…if you never owned tube gear…well, now you KNOW.

Remarkably, the little box sounded pretty darn good the moment I turned it on; not only before burn in, but before the thing had even warmed up! It also extends its majesty to encompass Pacific Ocean bass depth and Himalayan treble extension, the latter breathing new life into the top end of a pair of JohnBlue JB4 although, overall I still prefer the liquidity of NOS DACs with these loudspeakers.

However, if implemented incorrectly or matched to the wrong system, there is no guarantee Sabre DAC will be both detailed and musical. As an observer, I felt the stock unit presented a very wide soundstage, even wider with the silver fuse and wider yet with the modded EE. You will not find some limp, pale, wimpy, and overly-refined sound with the EE Dac; the listener is more likely to be bobbing his head and moving his feet to the groove and simply getting into it.

In fact, the solid state stage came across as slightly more pure and transparent in my system, but the preference could easily run the other way for systems with less tubes. Before passing judgment on DEXA, one should give them plenty of continuous burn-in, before which they can sound a little uptight, cool, and detached. Then I heard Wayne's modded unit and the earth shifted once again.

At the time, funds were not available to purchase them and to this day I wish I had sold a kidney or something to keep them. Here we have a marvelous product a gifted mod expert has made even better, and I thought that had to be an impossible feat.

Of course, rolling in a different tube is just the beginning of Wayne's mod. While it would not be correct to imply that the DAC chip is the end-all of DAC design, does all that precision Swiss engineering in Weiss eawtern worth that much more than the EE design in terms of sound quality? This thing makes music and should keep us music lovers satisfied for some time to come!
